Overview

Guldborgsund Forsyning, the water utility supplying the Guldborgsund municipality,
Denmark, started laying sewers in urban areas, villages and the countryside in 2010. In all, almost 3,000 properties will be a part of the pressurised sewer system.

The project

Guldborgsund Municipality has a total area of approximately 903 km² and approximately 5,300 hectares linked to sewage mains, with about 900 km of sewers and an estimated 300 km of network pipes, owned by Guldborgsund Forsyning. The age of the municipal sewage system is on average 40 to 55 years, and a significant part of the system was built in the period from 1960 to 1970 and in need of renovation.

The decision to build a pressurised sewer system for rural areas – also across open countryside, where appropriate – in addition to urban areas was based on an assessment of the long-term environmental benefits of a fully integrated system.

The first stage of the project in the northwest of the supply area consisted of 675 pressurised pumping stations – one on each property – with pumps and controls. The project started in April/May 2012 with the first delivery almost immediately following order placement. The project involved delivery of non-standard solutions, for example the requirement by the owner for wireless access to controls from up to 30 m, because the pumping stations are on private property and the operators need to be able to monitor the pumping station from a car. In addition to the delivery of pressurised pumping stations with SEG AUTOADAPT sewage grinder pumps, the project also involves sewer laying, the construction of main pumping stations and delivery of heavy-duty S and SL wastewater pumps, also supplied by Grundfos. The handover date for the first stage of the project is early 2013, and Grundfos has delivered on-time. The final deadline for the entire project is later in 2013.

The outcome

From the feedback received from all parties, Grundfos has lived up to and often exceeded expectations, taking on the role of a partner, delivering on time and at short notice, resolving issues without excessive cost or time penalties, and the online tools and resources supplied by Grundfos have been well received and used.

Grundfos brought to the project awareness and knowledge of environmental issues, such as energy saving measures, which have proved of great value for the owner. These skills were applied in the field together with the consultant engineers and contractor, giving the owner the opportunity for further lifecycle cost savings.

The Grundfos Solutions

Prefabricated pumping stations from Grundfos include a full range of functional modular pumping stations – complete with all necessary pumps, piping, valves and level controls. The pump pit, pumps and controls can be combined to suit specific requirements for each individual application.

Dedicated Controls for wastewater control up to six pumps in wastewater applications in main, network and pressurised pumping stations. A range of advanced features allow for system measurement and calculation, and integration with other monitoring, control and energy optimising equipment. The anticlogging attributes of the flush and reverse function are unique to Dedicated Controls, as is the ability for continuous energy optimisation according to duty condition. Communication is via wired or wireless (GPRS/GSM) networks to SCADA and BMS systems.

The SEG AUTOADAPT range of sewage grinder pumps is available from 0.9 kW to 4 kW and is specifically designed for pumping effluent and untreated domestic sewage. These pumps combine cost-effectiveness with maximum protection for the environment by facilitating the use of smaller pressure pipes for minimal investment costs. SEG AUTOADAPT combines the controller and all sensors in a single pump that adapts automatically to conditions in the pit. All external sensors, switches and cables are removed from the pit, eliminating complexity.
